但是实际上用的时候发现自己没有全部用上。我想给你一些建议,希望对你有所帮助。

; L, A) X8 S# p! r当我还是初中生的时候,老师们推崇牛津、牛津、牛津。所以就以为牛津词典是最好的。买了一本。实际上没有用。

A1 n) c6 W& X" G直到准备TOEFL的时候才真正开始使用词典。在建立足够的词汇量之前,我的眼睛总是倾向于看双解中的中文解释。再这个水平上,我强烈建议使用美国传统词典双解版本(AHD)。看中文解释。AHD的中文解释不同于牛津双解或者朗文双解。比如 “elevate” 朗文解释“抬高,举高” ,新牛津解释“举起,抬起”,但是AHD解释“(将一物)从低处向高处移动”。所以看AHD有点像查看现代汉语词典,只不过你查的英文单词,得到的是中文“解释”,而不是中文“翻译”。网上流传的AHD双解来自于金山词霸,有些人指出AHD的中文解释翻译的很不到位。但是我觉得足够使用。6 I, j" [9 L. 当英语水平升级到一定程度,不再瞄眼看中文解释的时候,就转入到纯英文解释的词典。个人从文曲星电子词典入手。觉得剑桥国际英语词典很好用--特别喜欢它的“归类解释”方法。后来发现朗文也用上了这个方法。比如“like” 就解释 “1. SIMILAR similar to something else, or happening in the same way", "3. EXAMPLE for example: " 。相比剑桥国际,朗文的解释更加全面。所以转到了朗文。后来发现牛津高级学习者词典也这样做了。但是经过尝试,觉得没有朗文舒服。一句话,推荐朗文。( O3 ?# N$ M8 _6 J, z
3 ~' M1 {& u( O* n当英语水平再次提升,我感到朗文以及同类学习者词典,解释看着都比较啰嗦。因此转向AHD,Merriam-Webster,Oxford Dictionary of English。起初用的是AHD。后来觉得自己的水平还没有到没有例句也可以理解词义的程度。所以更加青睐使用 ODE了。现在暂时就在这个水平了。; F2 i" I9 `( W

另外,背单词的时候,想知道词根。这样更好记忆。AHD和ODE的词根解释很好。基本上满足所有要求。AHD还有专门针对词根的篇幅。

写作的时候需要挑选正确的单词。我觉得初学者真的没有什么特别好的方法。我当时的做法是, n7 @+ Q% o; X- H* {6 _8 L" T/ q

这两个是最常用的同义词反义词词典。这样以来有很多候选。然后挑几个感觉像是自己想要的,看解释。然后查 Colins Cobuild,朗文Extra,以及牛津Collocation 来确认单词在句子中的用法。* ]& d1 F* ^+ N9 [3 [

要是词汇量达到了一定程度,就直接查 Oxford Thesaurus。然后看哪个词汇是自己想要的了。要是对词汇用法不熟悉,就继续查 Oxford collocation/Colllins CoBuild/Longman Extra 来确认用法。

& i P9 h. v2 G% _“avenge a murder”其实应译为“惩罚谋杀行为”。这还勉强罢了。关键是把“avenged their wronged parents”的意思完全理解和翻译反了,正确的应为“为他们受冤屈的父母复仇”。
