Scientists have collected more data than expected. 科学家们已经收集到了比预期更多的数据。
《柯林斯COBUILD高阶英汉双解学习词典》肯定借鉴了外研社的《现代英汉词典》。
其他学习型双解词典，scientisit 的义项汉译都只给了“科学家”。
《新牛津英汉双解大词典》借鉴了《英汉大词典》
a person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences科学家; 科研人员。

scientist 比科学家的门槛可低多了，“科学工作者”、“科研人员”确实也能被称为 scientist 的。

顺便我查了所有词典，发现 Kernerman Advanced Learner's Dictionary 的 scientist 最独到，列了两个义项（其他学习型词典都是只有 1 个义项，
1 a person whose work is the study or teaching of science: She is a research scientist. ▪ Scientists are trying to understand global warming.
2 a person who has expert knowledge of a particular science: Nuclear scientists conducted experiments and solved the problem.
