今天再次查了一个词characterize,有点体会出WBD的不同了
大多数词典中都与牛津的两个义项接近：
比如COD11中：
characterize
or characterise
■verb
describe the distinctive character of.
(of a feature or quality) be typical or characteristic of.
characterization noun

WBD中：
characterize
KAR ihk tuh ryz, transitive verb, -ized, -izing.
* to describe the special qualities or features of (a person or thing); describe:

SYN designate, class.
* to be a characteristic of; distinguish; mark out:
A camel is characterized by the humps on its back and its ability to do without water for several days.
* to give character to:
The author characterized his heroine in a few short paragraphs.
characterizable, adjective.
characterizer, noun.

其中：“ to give character to:”让我猜想到大概是“刻画”的意思，这句话可以译作“作者用几段文字刻画出女主角。“
大部分词典中都是从” describe，be,distinguish“这3个词走的，是绝对相不到“刻画”这么文艺的说法的，但就算是中文“描述”与“描绘”，“刻画”也是传神程度不同的。
再百度反查“刻画”的英文：
depict; describe; portray; score
description; engrave; characterize

这样大致验证了自己的理解，不知我的理解如何，请各位大侠指导指导。

这个WBD搜了一下amazon.com中只有旧的在卖了，没有新版的，官网这里的看不出版本？

即然英汉大词典出自这本，这本又有各种妙处，可以考虑拼出个双解的吗？
主要是作为学习者还没有完全转入英英状态前总喜欢有双解方式轻松点，特别是对于一此直接对应关系较明确名词类特别适合，形容，比喻不是简单对应的原文更好，这个WBD目前看起来基本不出新的，虽说有印刷版，但实在是少，除了IOS中的APP看起来还有点动作，单纯词典不知道这家是不是已经停止发展了
太想看到这本词典了！

同意。
当年(30年前)很爱买英英词典和百科全書，
world book 百科和词典那时大做广告, 香港書店都有得卖
(大英和大美要跟直销员订)
亲自比較几星期后，
觉得读者文摘的的great illustrated 好多了
什么都别沉迷，如今較新版的字典都尽数送人，
旧版的都扔掉，这套没人要，有空再送拾荒的
想起大英和大美要打赏清洁工抬走，不胜唏嘘。。。
