Thank you for writing to Merriam-Webster.

" _# |' h& _$ q' J2 {& U% b0 ]The dictionary utilizes a cautious wording for the etymology of retrodict; that is because retrodiction is shown only as an undefined run-on. Since retrodiction itself derives from attaching the prefix retro- to either diction or its etymon diction--, the etymology that we show takes a wording that hops over the undefined word and pins the etymology to that shared etymon instead ("-dict (as in predict)" rather than simply "retro- + predict").& i* n+ A) T0 p2 z0 `) t9 X

Question: I would like to know whether the word “retrodict”is deprived of “retrodiction”or“predict” directly .The word is said to be derived from “retro+dict” on the website and I understand it says the word was created to represent a new meaning in the 50s in the dictionary, however, the word “retrodiction” was created in 1895 , according to the “oed” . Thus,it is possible that it is derived from “retrodiction” directly,I think.
