rather than 是并列连词，连接的成份可以是名词、代词、形容词、介词(短语)、动名词、分句、不定式、动词，rather than to(describe)simple shapes，代表着和were describing complicated conglomerations of shapes并列， 若省略to,则变成了和主语they 并列，变成了they were simple single shapes.显然语义不通嘛！个人见解，如有错误，欢迎网友指正~

前面两个解答，没在点。

不应有to。
rather than 功能上相当于对等连词，连接两个平行对称的结构，这两个结构中重复的部分可以省略。
而rather than前面的句子根本没有to， 而且rather than前后的 复杂和简单shape是对称的名词词组。加了To就是错误。
