rhyme or reason中的rhyme到底是什麼意思?
仔細查了查 似乎rhyme這個詞沒有派生義可以解釋這個用法的出現 對於短語的解釋一概只是organization; order; logical sense還是說rhyme在這裡其實是指[押韻的]規律?所以短語的否定用法可譯為無跡可尋?望賜教 本帖最后由 loveaffairs 于 2018-6-20 22:44 编辑
Rhyme and reason (否定形式no rhyme or reason)是个很有文化的词。
关于其来历，有两个有趣的说法。一是说早年英国有个有志从事写作的人，将他的手稿拿给当时《乌托邦》的作者Thomas More审阅，More让他改成押韵体(rhyme)，待作者改完后，More说，“现在押韵了，之前既不押韵，又逻辑不通(It is rhyme now, but before it was neither rhyme nor reason)。”另一个据说更可信，是从法国人批评不押韵的狗屁诗歌的说法“sans rime ni raison (without rhyme, nor reason)”翻译而来。
不管怎么说，这个说法的意思就是说rhyme这一外在的形式(pattern)和reason这一内在逻辑(logic)。
默念这个短语，我们还会发现更有意思的东西，那就是头韵叠词(alliteratIve reduplication)。英语中的叠词大概有四种：

'Rhyme or reason' is first recorded by John Russell, in The Boke of Nurture, circa 1460:

Nicolas Udall, in his translation of The first tome or volume of the paraphrase of Erasmus upon the Newe Testament, in 1548, used the more usual negative form 'rhyme nor reason'

This line is best known from Shakespeare - initially in Comedy of Errors, 1590:
