Collins English Usage
If you play a musical instrument, you produce music from it.
He sometimes played the organ in the cathedral.
If you want to say that someone is able to play a particular instrument, you use `the'. For example, you say `She plays the piano' or `He plays the flute'.
Uncle Rudi played the cello.
However, rock and jazz musicians usually omit the `the'. They say `She plays piano' or `He plays guitar'.
There was one kid who played sax.

play (the) guitar: Her son plays guitar in a rock band.
不太清楚有无the的区别... 牛津8有一处：
