本帖最后由 klwo2 于 2019-10-29 22:39 编辑天哪！我早已不记得lieutenant这个词是不是什么四六级词汇，没想到这个词牛津高阶7、8、9版的汉译也能搞错：
1. an officer of middle rank in the army, navy, or air force （陆军）中尉；（海军或空军）上尉
2. (in compounds 构成复合词) an officer just below the rank mentioned 仅低于…官阶的官员
3. (in the US) a police officer of fairly high rank （美国警察的）一定级别的警官
lieutenant 这词有好几个讨人嫌的地方：
1. 英美读音不同，一个读/lefˈtɛnənt/，一个读/luˈtɛnənt/
2. 不同的部门之间、英美之间，lieutenant 的「实际地位」不同，光说lieutenant，不知道得翻译成哪个X尉，得看部门才行。英汉大词典：
lieutenant
n.
1. (美国)陆军(或空军、海军陆战队)中尉,少尉;(英国)陆军中尉
2. 海军上尉
3. 代理官员;副职官员,助理官员
4. (消防队、警察队的)中尉,少尉
不知道大家看到这么多「尉」字是不是很想打人，呵呵
所以ESL词典为了省事，干脆只给学习者「感性认识」，比如牛津高阶说了，lieutenant 的地位在军队里，不论英美，是中不溜的；在美国警队里，是偏高的
朗文这么说：
lieutenant /lefˈtenənt $ luːˈten-/ noun

a) a fairly low rank in the armed forces, or an officer of this rank 陆军中尉；海军上尉；空军中尉
b) a fairly high rank in the US police force, or an officer of this rank 〔美国警察的〕警督
朗文说lieutenant 的地位在军队里偏低；在美国警队里偏高 ——这都是感性认识，没让你真的翻译成「偏高的警衔」啊！
lieutenant 在美国警队里面当然不是什么「一定级别的警官」，仿佛没有硬性标准似的 —— lieutenant 在美国警队里比captain低一级：
新牛津：
1.3
(in the US) a police officer next in rank below captain
(美国)中尉警官。
AHD：
3. An officer in a police or fire department ranking below a captain.
Collins：
US. an officer in a police or fire department ranking immediately junior to a captain
牛津高阶这么翻译，大概有三个原因：
1. 误把「(in the US) a police officer of fairly high rank」看成是限定性的了，其实这句是描写性的
2. 没有核查其他辞书，其他英汉词典没看到在这里栽跟头的
3. 牛津高阶4里面没有警队这个义项，所以……呃……牛津高阶越做越差真的不是坊间乱说啊！
补个不相关的：牛津高阶4「lieutenant」条，说「见附录9」，可是mdx里面似乎没有附录9……
牛津高阶4英文部分据说参考自COD，可以看看COD对比一下。
具体哪个词我忘记了，但是我原来也是有一个词，查了O4才豁然开朗，从此把它挂在列表里了。
看了看这个词，发现个超搞笑的地方:

这个her，因该是the的typo吧 两个周前，我刚好折腾过这个单词。这个单词真的是讨人嫌！难点主要是中美军衔制不同，美军军衔对我来说，又是几乎不了解的。释义上折腾了两小时，作为美语学习者，最后决定取AHD5的释义为准，顺便又用了一小时把美军军衔也定义了，参见下图：
