下面是一部小说的开始——PYOTR LUZHKOV was about to be killed, and for that he was grateful. It was late October, but autumn was already a memory. It had been brief and unsightly, an old babushka hurriedly removing a threadbare frock. Now this: leaden skies, arctic cold, windblown snow. The opening shot of Russia’s winter without end.

Very interesting topic.
In my humble opinion, we should opt for books that are of interest to us, books that we enjoy reading. One sad fact about "well-known literature" is that most books of this category are too intimidating too overwhelming for English learners, which most likely will serve only to scare readers away. This shouldn't come as a surprise - when writing these books that later received critical accolades, the author(s) didn't really have English learners in mind.
Another suggestion is that we shoud choose books that are slightly more difficult than our reading comprehension abilities, that will require some effort, some dictionary-checking and note-taking. That's how we improve by reading. But not too difficult, nor too easy.
Pan.
