With the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck, I was born by C-section in November 1964 and then came up on the wrong side of the Cascade Mountains in the small, eastern Washington town of Ellensburg. My family were from a long line of coal miners, loggers, bootleggers, South Dakotan dirt farmers, criminals, convicts, and hillbillies of the roughest, most ignorant sort.

Born on the wrong side of the Korean Peninsula, Lee Dae-young grew up with his two siblings in a remote, impoverished little town that even people in its surrounding areas do not know exists.
Self-sufficient and hand-to-mouth, they lived off a small tract of land passed down from a long line of poor fathers, poorer grandfathers, and poorest great-grandfathers.
This family appeared to be happily oblivious to the outside world, except for a herd of animals and the Paramount Leader, Kim Jong-il, until Lee encountered a man from the other side, or, in this case the right side, of the two Koreas.

Born on the wrong side of the Korean Peninsula, Lee Dae-young grew up with his two siblings in a remote, self-sufficient little town that even North Korean locals do not know exists.
Happily oblivious to the outside world except for a herd of animals and the Paramount Leader, Kim Jong-il, the family lived off a small tract of land passed down from a long line of poor fathers, poorer grandfathers, and poorest great-grandfathers, until Lee encountered a man from the other, or, in this case the right, side of the two Koreas.
