epic ≈ 可歌可泣
本帖最后由 klwo2 于 2021-7-7 23:06 编辑一看见 epic 这个词,英汉词典就说「史诗」。当形容词使的时候呢?机器翻译就说「史诗般的」「史诗级」,什么史诗级失败啦,史诗级威胁啦,频频亮相外媒汉译,仿佛读者没去看过《伊利亚特》,就不配明白这外文的意思。
其实 epic 某些语境下,可以译作「可歌可泣」,原因如下:
新牛津:
1 Relating to or characteristic of an epic or epics.
1.1 Heroic or grand in scale or character.
1.2 Particularly impressive or remarkable.
某些时候,epic 的内涵跟「可歌可泣」是对得上的。汉语成语源流大辞典:
「可歌可泣」未必直接来自周易,但「歌」「泣」「涕」「诵」可以并列,问题不大,周易原句说的是战事,正好《伊利亚特》也不缺战争。

epic fail,是句半开玩笑的话,大约等于「糗大了」:
新牛津:
epic fail
NOUN
informal
(especially in the language of social media) a complete failure or misadventure, especially in an undertaking expected to proceed smoothly; a total disaster; frequently as interjection.
idioms:
epic fail
An especially big or embarrassing blunder.
I can't believe I called the CEO by the wrong name! What an epic fail.—— 信不信,我把CEO的名字念错了!真是悲剧呀!可歌可泣呀!
I tried to bake a cake for my sister's birthday, but I accidentally used salt instead of sugar. Epic fail. —— 我姐姐/妹妹过生日,我想烤个蛋糕给她庆祝一下,可一不小心把糖放成了盐。哭哭,惨兮兮。

有朋友要讲,你这证明给得太糙了一点,凭什么就epic ≈ 可歌可泣了呢?所以,还是抬出几本传统的词典来说:
牛津高阶双解(第四版) 正查+义项反查(带例句)+例句反查(全索引):
epic ˈepɪk; ˈɛpɪk
usu attribof or like an epic; heroic; grand 史诗般的;英勇的;宏伟的:
an epic encounter, struggle, achievement可歌可泣的遭遇战、英勇的斗争、伟大的成就。
汉英外事实用词典:
可歌可泣
moving one to song and tears; moving; stirring
~的斗争epic struggle/~的英雄业绩stirring deeds of heroism
汉英词通:
三本词典给的都是「战争」语境下的译文,是传统的做法。我把「epic fail」也用「可歌可泣」来翻呢,则有点活用的意思。 本帖最后由 oversky 于 2021-7-8 11:16 编辑
Oxford_Origin_Dictionary
epic /ˈɛpɪk/
Origin late 16th century (as an adjective): via Latin from Greek epikos, from epos 'word, song', related to eipein 'say'.
从字源来讲,“可歌”没问题。“可泣”就比较难讲了。
学习了,谢谢楼主。对epic的理解更深了。 影视剧口语中的epic,其实就是 超棒的 之类的。如果口语中译成史诗级的,就很出戏了。 epic
