From the canvas on which a white-robed Hersilia placed herself between her father to the left and husband to the right, both poised to attack, and the other Sabine women protected their babies, viewers could see a vivid picture of David sitting before his easel, breath calm, eyes wistful as his brush moved and immortalized this legendary scene in the most deliberate manner. That's true art of a true artist; that's why this glorious painting with a reconciliatory theme is still relevant over two centuries later today, in a world where sophisticated modern tribes having been launching at each other long-range belligerent rhetoric, blindly justifying life-destroying war.
