- ^4 ~* b6 H3 u5 AMuch like its namesake encyclopedia, World Book Dictionary (WBD) is often perceived as a work for children; one look at it, however, will convince users that this set makes a fine adult work. The WBD is the most "adult" of the famous Thorndike-Barnhart line of dictionaries. Started in the 1930s by educational psychologist Edward L. Thorndike and lexicographer Clarence L. Barnhart, dictionaries produced by the two men followed the basic tenet that definitions should be written in a simpler style than the entry word and that definitions should be arranged by frequency of use. Although WBD is intended to define words found in the encyclopedia, it makes an excellent standalone work, particularly given its extensive use of illustrative sentences and clear definitions. WBD's 225,000 main entries are even more impressive when one considers that many biographical and geographical entries normally found in such a work are not included if duplicated in the encyclopedia. Also excluded are any vulgarities. Most definitions have either illustrative sentences (created by the editors) or illustrative quotations, often drawn from journals. Also enhancing the definitions is the large number of black-and-white drawings, exceeded in number only by the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language in this class of works. Its 225,000 main entries place the WBD in a category all its own, as does, unfortunately, its price and format. Pricing varies whether or not it is purchased with a printed World Book Encyclopedia, but it is still easily the most expensive dictionary in its category. The two-volume format is very cumbersome but unavoidable given the relatively large typeface. The dictionary is included within the CD-ROM version of the encyclopedia, which is available at retail outlets at under $50, but there are, unfortunately, no audio pronunciations for the entries. Although individual users will likely pass over the WBD for a cheaper, one-volume work, libraries should certainly consider this fine set.
