Holmes, Sher‧lock  həʊmz, 'ʃɜːlɒk homz, ˋʃɝlɑk
; Y9 S6 K! y1 {% q5 A  U" J. N4 { the main character in the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is very clever and he always notices very small details and then uses them to guess what has happened. He is known for wearing a DEERSTALKER (= a type of hat ) , smoking a PIPE , and playing the VIOLIN . People often think he uses the phrase ‘Elementary, my dear Watson’ when he is explaining to his friend, Dr Watson, how easy it is to understand something. In fact, this phrase does not appear in any of the stories. Nevertheless, people sometimes use it to emphasize how simple a solution to a problem is. 歇洛克·福尔摩斯〔英国小说家阿瑟·柯南·道尔爵士所著侦探小说的主要人物。人们误以为Elementary, my dear Watson（很简单，亲爱的华生）是福尔摩斯的口头禅，有时会以此来强调解决问题的方法非常简单〕

当然，词典里还有“舍洛克”（CALD）、“夏洛克”（COBUILD）、“谢洛克”（新牛津） 等等，甚至同一本词典里，Sherlock 出现了不同的汉译。

还是夏洛克比较好，这主要是传统上，我们喜欢用中文姓氏和三字结构表示外国人姓名。
  u- a+ O8 q! I' F9 d! F0 J+ L译名不统一，说明词典编辑者做学问不严谨。
