It’s still unclear whether anyone else has noticed this breach of trust from the Merriam-Webster company or even cares.
大多数买MWC的人，包括那些声称该词典多精确、多全面的人，恐怕买回家主要是用来积灰或者打蟑螂。。。Palmer觉得他戏弄了广大读者，其实恐怕只有一个人参与了游戏，这个人还是个obsessive compulsive患者。。。谁更可笑呢？
我发现英语老鸟常用MWC的还真是不多，看过很多知名翻译、知名学者的博客、访谈，有常用Collins Cobuild、OALD、LDOCE的，有把CALD背下来的，有经常翻WNWCD、ODE、W3、SOED的，还真没看到有谁把MWC作为主力词典
感觉这词典似乎没有根据语料库增删释义，常常漏收比较新的用法，大约还停留在上个世纪的水平
目前感觉朗文的语料库很强大，查LDOCE6，释义非常全面，还没发现漏收义项的

细致到位的描绘胜过无生气的定义。

发现一个很有意思的现象
tranquility
这个词在Fowler's Modern English Usage 2nd 是不正确的(mis-spellings)，应该是tranquillity
在Fowler's Modern English Usage 3rd 里，认为tranquility是美式用法
而查vocabulary.com的时候，词典把这两个词都收录了（tranquility和tranquillity）。词频显然后者高。有意思的是，这两个词的文字解释竟然不一样，但似乎都表示同一种含义
另外，vocabulary.com查sanctuary，里面的解释文字用的是tranquility

重要的是排名（rank），频度数据不更新问题不大。
低频词突然串升为高频词的可能性比较小。

quantum leap/jump
quantum本来指代的是很小的数量，有意思的是，现在和leap或jump组成短语却指非常大的进步、进展等类似含义（并不局限于物理领域）
vocabulary.com对这个词条和quantum词条都有较详尽的阐述。

啜了一口洗碗水？几乎没有什么颜色？
红色部分表达的意思应该是“仅仅是咖啡色的像咖啡那样的东西”吧。

理解为He passed the barely brown dishwater off as coffee 他刚刚把褐色的洗碗水/ 味道差的汤、茶等误作咖啡啜了几口。
