从cheerleader条看英汉（双解）词典
最近在看美剧Heroes （http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813715/）。
Claire Bennet 是 cheerleader.
save the cheerleader, save the world。字幕大多翻译成“拯救啦啦队长，拯救世界”。我对此感到很困惑，因为啦啦队里的所有成员都叫 cheerleader，无论从这个词英文释义还是剧情前后来看，译作“拉拉队员”更合理啊。有问题，查词典，有了一些发现。

牛津高階英漢雙解詞典（第8版 & 第7版）、朗文当代高级英语辞典（英英·英汉双解）（第5版、第4版）、剑桥高阶英汉双解词典、麦克米伦高阶英汉双解词典、柯林斯COBUILD高阶英汉双解学习词典等，cheerleader都是“拉拉（啦啦）队员”，没有“队长”义，值得一赞。

"啦啦队长"不能算是错译。
W3 :one that calls for and directs organized cheering (as at a football game)

当然最全面的要数AHD了：

我感觉新牛津和Random House还是不错的。
前几天，我查了一下charge这个词，主要是看它做名词时，表示“充电”过程或动作的含义，而不是表示电荷或所含电量，结果如下：
学习词典没有。
AHD没有
韦氏大学没有
韦氏新世界没有
chambers没有
Shorter Oxford没有
wordnet没有
新牛津英汉：

the process of charging a storage battery. OALD8的释义大家都可以查到，就不再列举了，ECD2（2007）是不是主要参考了英式词典的说法尚未可知，这得问陆老神仙，但我昨天查了一下Collins Cobuild Advanced第八版（2014），把这条重打一下：A cheerleader is one of the people who leads the crowd in cheering at a large public event, especially a sports event.
2014年圣诞节才出版的大修馆《GENIUS英和辞典》（第5版），给了两条释义：チアリーダー，チアガール（即啦啦队队长，啦啦队姑娘），后面还有不会说Cheergirl的标记，看来cheerleader指“啦啦队长”并非是空穴来风！ 楼主很细心，不错，加油哦。
我觉得关键是看context. Random House的解释也很清楚：
a person who leads spectators in traditional or formal cheering, esp. at a pep rally or athletic event.
可见，lead的宾语是spectators，而不是“拉拉队”。
发现《现代英汉词典》第 3 版修订了这个词条。

上面第6条是笔者查阅的所有英汉词典中唯一提到“啦啦队员”的，但是后边带上“啦啦队长”就不准确了；第7条例句中其它部分处理是否得当姑且不论，斜体字翻译成“啦啦队”倒是正确，可是与给出的这个词的解释又不对应了—— 其实如果仔细推敲，从这个句子出发就可以把这个词的真正含义分析出来。
双解词典部分：

从1－3条看，情况还不是太清楚 —— 不过应该也还不能确定就是“队长”；但是我们如果对第4条仔细分析，就会发现 cheerleader 不可能是指“啦啦队长”，只能是“啦啦队”中的一个成员；
汉英词典部分：
汉英大辞典（上卷）p.1518：啦啦队 … … ◇～队员 rooter；～队长 cheerleader; yell leader; a rooter king；
这里给出的“啦啦队员”的解释是“rooter”；不管怎么说，“啦啦队员”的解释中应该包括“cheerleader”，这里把“啦啦队长”解释成“cheerleader”是不准确的；
英英词典部分：

从英英词典的解释中我们可以清楚地看到“cheerleader”只是带领观众欢呼的一班人（“squad”）中的一个，所以只能是“啦啦队员”。
上面提到的那本书讲的是一个中学的啦啦队，由四名女生和两个男生组成，每个人都被称为 “cheerleader”，而他（她）们的队长 Olivia 被称为“squad captain”；这本书目前在国家图书馆还查不到，笔者是在北京外研书店买的，今天（04年11月14日）浏览外研书店的网页，这本书仍有销售。
由于几乎所有的英汉词典都是这样一种解释，所以有的译者在这里有所闪失也就不奇怪了：
世界知识出版社2000年出版的英汉对照作品《局外人The Outsiders》第52页，在介绍一个新出场的人物时，作者写道“Boy, she was good-looking. I’d seen her before; she was a cheerleader at our school. I’d always thought she was stuck-up…”这里的“cheerleader”被译成了“啦啦队长”；
清华大学出版社1999年出版的英汉对照作品《Short Takes 缤纷生活》中第36－40页上有一句话 “……telling her about how Paul had dumped me for Karen O’Shea, a cheerleader.”这里的“cheerleader”也被译成“啦啦队长”；
实际上如果我们仔细推敲，假定这个词的意思是“队长” 的话，毕竟一队之长只有一个人，而且一般每校只有一个啦啦队，那么前边应该用“the”而不是“a”了。
本文作者曾在2003年底把此事打电话告知《英汉大词典》主编、复旦大学陆谷孙教授，陆教授一听我问这个词的意思，立刻不假思索地答到：“是‘啦啦队员’啊，我们写的什么？”
前些日子，本人与曾在北京外国语大学任教的美国专家莫大伟（David Moser）博士通电话时，提到这个问题，他对词义的答复同陆教授一样。
这个词之所以被误解，估计是词典编者受了这个词中“leader”部分的误导，以为是整个啦啦队的“leader”，不料却是“lead”所有的观众“cheer”的“人”—— “cheerleader”。
虽然这个词对我们来说不能算常用，但从上引两例来看，在美国大、中学生的日常生活中出现的频率却比较高；加之几乎所有的英汉词典的解释都不够确切，更有使翻译者以讹传讹的可能，所以笔者认为这一问题应该得到更正；不当之处，欢迎批评指正。 xiaokeai 发表于 2016-3-26 23:03
