搜了下，这句话是有上下文的，但是只能看到一句。
Paul Samuelson labored to quantify the somewhat gnomic utterances of John Maynard Keynes in his General Theory.
搞不好原文作者想指的是凯恩斯在那书里的简短难懂的话语。因为凯恩斯是伟人嘛，虽然言简意不赅，他写的可能总会有那么点道理，所以委婉地说是 gnomic ，又加了个 somewhat 。
《新世纪》的翻译更保守点，《柯林斯》可能有点偏离原意。

似乎柯林斯足本（http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/gnomic）没有像新牛津（http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/gnomic）一样收录类似下面的义项：
1.1 Difficult to understand because enigmatic or ambiguous 令人费解的；含糊不清的：
I had to have the gnomic response interpreted for me
如果原始文章中的那个 gnomic 可以用上面这个义项来理解的话，就是说凯恩斯的《通论》写的太像箴言了以致都到达让人费解的程度了，不知道这样理解对不对？
不过查了许多词典，貌似没几本词典收录这个义项。SOED6、OED2、韦氏新国际、韦氏大学11、柯林斯、WBD...都没有收。

其实，OALD4对gnomic的解释就很好，而OALD8双解反而解释的让人无法把握该词的真正含义：
大概，《道德经》中"道可道非常道"之类的便属这种情况吧，虽然字都认识，但是真正解释清除比较麻烦。
OALD4：
(of a remark, etc) mysteriously brief and obscure （指言语等）（出奇地）简短而晦涩的
OALD8：
( formal) (of a person or a remark 人或言语 )clever and wise but sometimes difficult to understand 喜用格言的；精辟的；深奥的
Webster's New World College Dictionary的解释则完全是正面的，我一直没有搞懂，新世界词典为什么被美联社视为权威，就是MED和CALD的解释都比它清楚。

gnomic 这词有点明褒暗贬的意味啊。
OALD8：
( formal) (of a person or a remark 人或言语 )clever and wise but sometimes difficult to understand 喜用格言的；精辟的；深奥的
这不过是翻译造成的感情色彩不同。
看看MWCD9：
1.Characterized by aphorism(=short wise saying)不就是格言、警句吗？当然是精辟、睿智之类的褒义，而且这条释义MWCD9注明词义早在1815年就有（不排除后来的词义发展变化），英美词典看法也未必一致。 的确，个人认为，美式英语对gnomic的解释为褒义，基本意思是含格言的，精炼的；英式英语，偶尔含贬义，含有模糊不清，言语故意高深莫测，使之神秘，有炫耀嫌疑。
W1913对gnomic的解释是：
Sententious; uttering or containing maxims, or striking detached thoughts; aphoristic.
Century Dictionary 1889对gnomic的解释是：
Containing or dealing in maxims; sententious.
对sententious的解释是：
Full of pithy sentences or sayings; pithy; terse: as, a sententious style or discourse; sententious truth.
对pithy的解释：
containing much in a concentrated or dense form; of style, sententious: as, a pithy saying or expression.
COED11对gnomic的解释：
1in the form of short, pithy maxims or aphorisms.
2enigmatic; ambiguous.
OALD4对sententious的解释：

OALD8双解对sententious的解释：
