consult lawyers or consult with lawyers

本帖最后由 Littlebush 于 2016-11-21 10:14 编辑

近期的NYT有这么一个句子Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, has consulted with lawyers about the possibility of joining the new administration, a move that could run afoul of federal nepotism laws and would all but certainly invite legal challenges. 印象中consult doctor/lawyer等professional的时候应该是vt,查词典也是vt,那么这个consult with 是否属于误用?BTW,英语中的名词的数和动词的及物或非及物确实让人头痛。

consult 做及物动词是“咨询”,做不及物动词是“商量”,楼主又不查词典{:4_109:}

LDOCE5:
Consult: vt, vi
to ask for information or advice from someone because it is their job to know something:

//If symptoms persist, consult a doctor without delay.

consult somebody about something
//An increasing number of people are consulting their accountants about the tax laws.

//consult with:
I need to consult with my lawyer.

//see/consult a lawyer (=talk to a lawyer for advice)
She has consulted a lawyer and is considering whether to sue Bailey.

但是,WU:
vt.
to ask advice of : seek the opinion of : apply to for information or instruction
consult a doctor about an ailment

vi.
to take counsel : deliberate together : confer
after consulting with a lawyer

========
MW11:

http://forum.wordreference.com/threads/consult-and-consult-with.2262139/

If you consult with someone then you each consult the other, on an equal footing. For example:
[*=1]"What time do you and your wife want to visit us this evening?"[*=1]"I don't know---I need to consult with her first"[*=1]The two of you then consult with each other to agree what answer to give.
If you consult someone, they have some information or an opinion, and you go to them in order to get it from them. It only happens in one direction. For example:
[*=1]If you feel ill, you should consult a doctor.
[*=1]To check the meaning of a word, I consult my dictionary.

区别其实很微弱,也可以说没有区别。真正的要害在于:当做seek professional advice or discuss with sb to make a decision这2个意思解的时候,consult 或 consult with均可以,consult with也并非北美用法,我也经常看到美国的医学方面的报道用的consult your doctor这样的说法,btw,有人说doctor是英国的用法,美国说physician,但其实并非如此,美国也经常说doctor。All in all,语言这玩意很多时候没有特比clear-cut的distinction,这给user造成很大的困扰。
