请问,due to用在这里为什么是错的?

原句是,He lost the first game, due to carelessness.
The elements of style的作者说这里用得不对,但是,即便是许多native speakers也这么用。
能否请精通这方面的,解释一下,谢谢。
如果可以,请少用术语,谢谢!

从严格的语法学角度上讲,due是个形容词,不能用作介词。这都是过时的语法规则了

That book is a bit advanced, but the content is correct.
Traditionally due to should be restricted to adjectival use; hence, it should usually be followed with a to be verb. In that sense due means attributable.

- due to modifies a noun (you will probably need a to be verb for it)
- because of modifies a verb (you have already a verb in the sentence for it)

Generally speaking, you will learn that it is better to write actively and avoid to be verbs.
Although the language is changing and due to is widely used instead of because of, owing to, and caused by, I think it's easier to just avoid due to.

- My success in the exam was due to my diligence.
- I passed the exam because of my diligence.

Both above sentences are correct, but you better practice using the second one.
