India shows how hard it is to move beyond fossil fuels>

It is not a one-off. For all Mr Modi’s ambitions for renewable energy, Patratu is part of a projected 48GW of coal-fired capacity under construction or planned between 2017 and 2022. Although it is a sharp slowdown compared with recent years, it goes far beyond replacing 22.7GW that is due to be retired and is not far short of the 69GW of renewable energy so far installed in India. For comparison it is almost as much as the total thermal-power capacity of South Africa, a coal-burning country.

那同样也是对比的 “the 69GW of renewable energy” 就有 the 啊

articles in gerund

Gerunds act like any other noun and can take the definite or indefinite article when referring to a specific instance of an activity:

a reading of my latest book

the singing coming from the church

The rule you’re citing is that the gerund does not take the definite article when referring to an activity in general, but this rule also applies in other cases where the noun isn’t a gerund:

I like swimming.

I like basketball.

I suspect this rule is taught because it’s explitictly different from many Romance languages, where the definite article is used to refer to general activities.

it goes far beyond replacing 22.7GW that is due to be retired and is not far short of the 69GW of renewable energy so far installed in India.

.. it goes far beyond the replacement of 22.7GW ..

It goes far beyond replacing 22.7GW that is due to be retired. ...

Being a good citizen means more than just doing what is required by law.

用 replacement 代替 replacing 的话, 也是要用 the 的:it goes far beyond the replacement of 22.7GW。

嗯,a replacement of 22.7GW

就像我上个回帖里说的being a good citizen和doing what is required by law也是并行结构一样。
