这个句子中【which】的用法
【Dogs also smell through each nostril separately, so they can tell which direction a smell is coming from.】（狗还能通过每个鼻孔分开地闻东西，所以它们能分辨气味来自的方位。）这句中【which】的位置不太理解是哪种语法现象？为什么不能用【tell dirction which a smell is coming from】? 这里的which不是定语从句的关系代词，是tell的宾语从句中的主语，是个疑问限定词。如果将该宾语从句独立出来，就是which direction is the smell coming from? 这里的which明显不是关系代词，应该是疑问代词，类似which one 的用法 感觉也能用啊。相当于tell the direction where a smell is coming,就是比较啰嗦，the direction可以省略 本帖最后由 黑色的天 于 2019-3-28 16:21 编辑

首先要注意的是，第一句中的which不是定语从句的关系词。
用which direction这样的表达是出于句意的考虑，（气味从哪一个方向过来的），强调“哪一个”的意思。
如果用定语从句，句子的措辞需要变一下，例句 they can pinpoint the direction a smell is coming from.（这样句子就不再包含“哪一个方向”的含义）
