比较牛津高阶英英第九版和第十版释义：因何而delirious？
比较牛津高阶英英第九版和第十版释义：因何而delirious？--------------------------------------
本人英语不行，这里只是发表偶然观察所得，毕竟在论坛潜水偷师一段日子了。
牛高第九版和第十版都说delirium一般为疾病所致，
可是看看delirious和deliriously的释义，在第十版用high temperature代替fever，
总不可能白天天气热就不认人，晚上天气热就 mumbled in delirium all night吧？
我还没说电脑发热，电脑主人becames delirious呢！
fever可不是难词，如果为了更浅白而改，这“高温”改得模糊了，也在三个相关词条中显得不统一。

同样表示不明白为什么OLAD10要选择将fever替换成high temperature，虽然作为ESL词典，牺牲部分accuracy换取一种学习阶段的受众更广泛的comprehension可以理解，但是high temperature真的比fever的受众更广吗?从二语习得的角度，词汇学习的先后来看，high temperature真的要比fever简单吗？如果不是，那么既牺牲了accuracy，又影响了comprehension，真的不懂了，按说修灯版应该是把有问题的地方给更正过来，没有道理越改越差劲的呀。 belleyeah 发表于 2020-3-5 08:33

cold and fear，没有与fever/ delirium /high temperature直接挂钩，可见已经是引申义了
每个词典定位不同，学习型词典释义省去不常用的本义也没什么。

wordreference英汉词典里有收 high temperature 就是指发烧 (https://www.wordreference.com/enzh/high%20temperature)，而且 temperature 本来就可以指人的体温或高烧，比如 run a temperature（发高烧），take one's temperature (量体温)。OALD 10 把原来的fever改成 high temperature，可能只是为了通俗易懂吧。 OALD10的解释比OALD9的解释更准确了，从医学角度来说，OALD9的解释是不够全面的：

谢谢回复。刚刚看到部份健康医疗网站有用high fever，有直指fever的，也有指超过一定体温的严重高烧和mild fever 区分。
有关delirious释义，请问他这个high temperature代替fever，是否用得地道？还是为了追求释义浅白而妥协了？如果用得对，有没有英式美式的关系？我查了Shorter Oxford English Dictionary 6th ed.，Merriam-Webster.com和Collinsdictionary.com，没办法肯定这个high temperature用得准确地道。谢谢。 lz慧眼。high temperature的含义的确太宽泛了，感觉OALD10这个解释改的失败。 belleyeah 发表于 2020-3-5 08:33

谢谢，我总觉得OALD10这回解得有点李白字太白。 你阅读德很仔细。即使要使用temperature,最好使用high body temperature 或an abnormally high body temperature， 楼主分析有理。其实，词典并不是越新越好。就好比现在的文章，洋洋洒洒几大篇，还不如古人一句话的内涵多。牛津前几版比较精到，第4版以后，就像白话文，简单是简单了，可是总觉得缺乏韵味。 天气的高温一般用heat，不用high temperature，high temperature一般都是指体温 geoffreypang 发表于 2020-3-5 07:56

如上，除了疾病和药物影响，高温也可以指化学反应、物理工程、天气等方面的高温。
在未先限定在疾病或药理范围而直接用high temperature作释义，也没写明是body temperature, 我认为不妥。
“high temperature” 非医学专属，不如fever作补充例子好。若要符合医学解释，fever则不如“......a re-setting of the hypothalamic set point usually by pyogens” 和 “hyperthermia”。
话说回来，这不是一本英语学习词典吗？
如果改名为“医学词典”，high temperature可以作释义，对应.....due to a re-setting of the hypothalamic机制及hyperthermia，
医学专业的一看就明白，因为词典类型已经限定了释义范围就在医学里头。
我认为它作为语言词典而非医学资料，在delirious相关词组的释义补充（usually because of）：
以fever为佳，
以hypothalamic之类的医学专有名词为次，
以有hidden条款，暗中连接到hyperthermia的high temperature为差。

用high temperature本就笼统，用high body temperature也未必是病征 ，因为运动员热身也会。
整体来看，delirious原义的关联就是delirium-excited state-not able to think or speak clearly-usually because of illness。引申义则是引申义，因为引申义本身太广而且常变化，如果把引申义和原义当做一个来解释，原义会一直跟着引申义跑，语言和文字的释义会变化得太快和非常不稳定。 Popular 发表于 2020-3-5 08:22

intermittent fever
periodic fever
remittent fever

想太多。语言本来就是在不断发展的。大部分汉字的引申义早就面目全非了，看看小学生查的新华字典，再看看说文解字的本义。新华字典的释义没必要把说文解字的释义附上，目标读者不一样。 还是以ODE为准吧，解释比较准确。朗文解释是：talking continuously in an excited or anxious way, especially because you are ill.(4-6版）朗文第一版：of, related to, or typical of DELIRIUM( an excited dreamy state in serious illness.) geoffreypang 发表于 2020-3-5 07:56

学习怎能不思考呢？
语言不断发展没错，这不能证明词典编辑改的新释义一定好对吧？两者哪有必然关系了？
新华字典和说文解字适合对应牛津高阶学习词典么？
好吧，就是观点不同，不如把讨论焦点重新放回去，讨论新释义中的high temperature有没有比fever好这事。 delirium 這個字，在很多地方被強烈的誤解。
特別在華人醫師看來，這是患者自身心理的問題，
且狀況時好時壞。這個在中文wiki與英文wiki是有明顯的差異。
而導致這個病因，有身體發燒
(嚴格來說，比自己平常體溫高2度C以上就算是)
、酗酒引起的慢性酒精中毒、突發事件造成家人死亡、
腦細胞病變、多次反覆住院或開刀...等等原因都有可能引發此病。
只需要把相關病因解決了，就能康復。
