everyone后面的谓语动词应该是单数还是复数呢
请教everyone 到底应该跟单数还是复数形式的谓语动词呢？老师和语法书上都说是跟单数，但是Fowler's dictionary 里说当做复数。为什么呢？！ Fowler 到底怎么说的你都不贴出来，这不明摆着缺席审判人家吗2 Just as with everybody, pronouns and adjectives referring back to everyone are often plural, ‘the absence', as the OED puts it, ‘of common gender rendering this violation of grammatical concord sometimes necessary'. 你都用they了，they当然跟复数了，问题是那就跟everyone 没有关系了呀

这不写着呢吗，they跟everyone 在单复数问题上别扭了一点，有时候是需要的

可是，我在一本formal的书上看到了这样一句句子：
The logic behind this belief is that everyone can benefit from becoming a better thinker and, as a result, have a greater control over their thinking processes.
我现在理解have 是跟在can后面的。但是their 反指的是 everyone,这个可是formal的表达。
