韦氏的这个例句有问题么？

suffer作及物动词时，后面的宾语通常都是具体有所指的，比如suffer pain，suffer torture之类。单纯的a great deal若作名词，所指不明，没法作宾语，所以此处它只能是程度副词，作状语，修饰suffer。suffer不及物，指受到损失，受到损害的意思。
换言之，如果把a great deal所指的事物补充完整，那这里的suffer就变成了及物动词，相应地，a great deal就变成宾语了。比如：
We suffered a great deal of pain during the war.我们在战争期间遭受了巨大的痛苦。

应该是两种都说得过去，但是名词可以做副词。
