pot-hole比喻？

This flaw in the design plan leads to a reassessment, and an adjustment to add a few pot-holes or obstacles along the way.

粗略看来，pot-hole似乎是某种比喻，但是词典上查不到比喻的用法。这句话怎么翻比较好？

A pothole is a minor difficulty encountered along a reasonably smooth path (a pothole is where part of the road surface has a hole in it, so it’s bumpy when you drive over it).

我本来想用坎坷来翻译，但感觉坎坷这词太重了，不够minor。
