请问如何理解这里的"the invention underlying the patent”？

该专利的底层发明，似乎是这样的概念，即将文本输入管理系统，存储在服务器上，然后在互联网上发布。
句子意思并不难懂，令人困惑的是“The invention underlying the patent”，它难道不应该是写成“The underlying invention of the patent”吗？underlying作为形容词，为什么要放在invention后面？the patent前面为什么没有表示所有格的of？
要是把underlying理解为介词，就一切顺理成章了，但翻遍词典，也没找到说underlying可以作介词。

原本是“The underlying invention the patent……”？这也说不通啊，而且underlying也没“构成”的意思。
再有一个例子：Scalia was addressing the problem of Supreme Court recusals, but the principle underlying his words is the same: The court cannot operate with eight justices.
同样是理解为介词完全没问题，理解为形容词就很困惑。怀疑这是underlying的一种特有用法：它本来就可以形容词当介词用。 fydy01 发表于 2023-5-8 10:20

不是不能接受，是理解不了啊~举个例子，The man sitting in the cormer is my brother，这是现在分词作后置定语，如果把它还原成正常语序，是这样的：Thesitting in the cormer man is my brother，sitting作定语，in the corner作sitting的状语，依然结构清晰，很好理解。那么，“The invention underlying the patent”还原出来，应该是怎样的呢？里面有两个the。 fydy01 发表于 2023-5-8 11:51

现在分词作后置定语是指定语从句，The man sitting in the corner is my brother应该理解为The man who is sitting in the corner is my brother; “The invention underlying the patent”应理解为The invention which underlies the patent.
