. p( r$ q m' j1 YNouns, the largest class of words in English (and in most languages), are the names of things, people, animals, places, qualities, actions, and ideas. A noun that refers to one of these is singular; while a noun that refers to more than one of these is plural. A noun is usually a single word, but not always: cake, shoes, school bus, and time and a half are all nouns.

On 21 September 2007, 16,000 words lost their hyphens in a Sixth Edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. Angus Stevenson, editor of the Shorter OED, stated the reason: "People are not confident about using hyphens anymore, they're not really sure what they are for." Its researchers reviewed 2 billion words (in newspapers, books, web sites and blogs from 2000). Bumble-bee is now bumblebee, ice-cream is ice cream and pot-belly is pot belly, etc. 3 \!
