破折号用法

这句话中的破折号看着有点怪，是不是因为作家年代久远的缘故？

2 x' l% s8 o" C) x' C4 J对不对？请教！

我觉得这里的on the first night he came here更像是插入语，不用一对破折号，至少要用一对逗号，不用一对逗号，至少要用一对括号。

谢谢。我觉得我改的符合第一条。但是要说原作者写的符合第二条，我看着不太像。

Like commas and parentheses, dash set off parenthetic material such as examples,supplemental facts, and explanatory or descriptive phrases.
如果说原句中“that the mystery might be a little too plain”属于explanatory phrase,那么做时间状语的on the first night he came here又充当什么角色？想想，改成如下的句子更符合第二条吧
( }/ f$ s' ^3 `; i  A- ORemember that I said to G on the first night he came here -- that the mystery might be a little too plain.

+ y! o3 B( W. X  ~% n将这里的时间状语归入描述性短语，只能这么解释了。也就是说这个破折号后同时带解释性和描述性短语。但我不明白将这个描述时间的状语放破折号后和紧跟在它修饰的动词后（也就是破折号前），效果上有什么不同。
想想还是不对，就算这个时间状语可以放在后面，最起码也应该和那个解释that的短语隔开，中间加个逗号吧。因为这个时间状语是修饰前面的said的！
