as 从句中使用完成时怎么理解

比如这句，作者应该是想说“随着疫情蔓延，中美关系滑入低谷”

但为什么不用一般现在时呢，as从句中用一般现在时是可以表示延续的啊。
As the disease spreadS, relations between America and China plunge into an abyss...

'As' here means 'in the way in which' instead of 'while something else is happening'.
You could add 'just' to the start of the sentence of interest if you're still confused.

~~Having had a second look, I think 'as' here simply means 'although'.~~

spread 和 plunge 这两者之间也没有什么可比性啊，不像是方式状语从句啊
