这段话第一句能否去掉is there that, 意思有什么不同能？谢谢

3 u2 {' _' k# w# p* l+ d这很简单，不用太纠结语法。只要你知道初中学的is there an apple?和what is your name？就解决了。前者在问某物存在与否，后者在问某物的具体内容，其区别当然就显而易见了。

- Z' H) o: z4 U2 a4 L如果非要纠结语法，你会发现What is there that is not poison?其实就是既问存在又问具体内容，为什么会出现这种现象呢？因为本句的语法结构很特殊，what既是主句there is的形式表语问存在、又是定语从句 that is not poison的实际主语（特殊先行词）问内容.这也是你困惑的点位，本句必须两点（即，存在和内容）同时出现才能达到本句该有的含义。如果你觉得懵，还是刚才那句“不用太纠结语法”，本句结构特殊记住含义便可。

问存在和问定义的区别，即“存在什么不是毒吗？”和“什么 不是‘毒’？”，后者在中文里有歧义。定义是抽象的概念，存在是具体事物，在这个例子里两个问题的答句大有不同，问存在的what is there可以回答“苹果不是毒”，但问定义的what is则需要答句主语是抽象概念，例如“人食用后而无害的不是毒”。反问句容易有歧义，这里不妨去考察没有否定词的问句，反而容易明白，比如what is there that is red?和what is red?，前者的意思是“那儿有个红的东西是什么？”（原来做的这个翻译好像有问题，what is there应该是全指而不是特指，所以意思应该是“什么东西是红的”）后者的意思是“红色是什么？”

我觉得细究的话有点区别。what is there that is not poison?针对的是有人认为there is something that is not poison.,因而问what is there 。。。？有一种对话感。意思是“如果你一定要说什么东西无毒，那么请你告诉我。”而what is not poison？听上去更强硬，意思是“什么不是毒药？”

“有什么不是毒药？”和“世上存在的有什么不是毒药？”的区别吧。但这第二句我翻译的有问题，我更倾向“那不是毒药的是什么呢？”

Try rephrasing the question this way.

Yes, I think your understanding of it is correct.

When doing English to Chinese translations, though, sometimes you should let go of certain words or phrases so that your translation sounds more natural in that very language.
