Day one, vacationing in style. - }6 p/ U# u* q
Check in at the swanky Ivy Hotel, and the pampering begins the minute you walk in the boldly decorated lobby. Opened in 2007 in the Gaslamp Quarter known for its restaurants, galleries and boutiques, the Ivy is all about its guests. Personal butlers are on hand 24 hours a day to assist with everything. Evening snacks, turndown service, morning newspapers, and high-end body products come standard. No matter where you stay, venturing out to dinner is a must. Vagbond Kitchen serves eclectic cuisine inspired by world travel, such as Black African Sea Bass in Cornhusk, Caribbean style. Skip dessert - you are going to want to turn in early tonight. The Ivy's beds are worth it, and there's a lot on the agenda tomorrow., W( g; p( i. d5 x3 q8 m. P3 }

Listening brings another dimension to your English learning; it's a great supplement to your reading. They complement each other. In short, listening should be deemed one of our everyday endeavors.

    I hope you like the Challenge.  It's an article from the Advanced Studio Classroom magazine. But I don't have the printed magazine. I have only the audio file. I tend to think in trying to improve one's listening ability, one should try his/her utmost effort to avoid diving into the text too soon.

    you r right. the transcript is at best a crutch and a last resort and one should learn to walk on one's own feet without turning to it for help. reading the script first or just after listening once or twice trains one's reading, instead of listening.

    You made a very good point. Reading comprehension is very important per se, but it can't replace listening trainings. Listening is a different aspect of the language. Its importance can't be overemphasized. For a case in point, a child who's just found his/her tongue learns the langauge, whatever language that is, by exposing himself/herself to the sound of it. Adults may be able to learn in their own ways, but listening training should always be encouraged.
