`- Z5 i& O2 B8 j; ?6 L9 D5 R, z

      T" ?- Q8 B' ^& C比如:
, m$ ]4 ~) N0 y) j5 dOn the shore of the lake, twelve boats waited for them. Out of each boat rose a shadowy figure to take the hand of the princess who came to him and help her into the boat. I paused almost too long, trying to see the faces of the richly dressed men who were pushing the boats into the water...! D" N1 ]1 s5 m

但能否等价为 were waiting for them?. D; M8 Q" K+ @# \& z* W: c

Grammatically speaking, in this case both "the boats waited for them" and "the boats were waiting for them" are correct, but maybe with slight differences. I would say in many contexts they are almost exchangeable; it often depends on what the author wishes to stress on.

English is a language; it's evolving as we speak. It's not math. It's not an exact science. One shouldn't allow him/herself to get bogged down in trivial details like this. 5 r% y7 Z' V) l+ V% z) T
